Resources for Job Seekers

As one of 136,000 plus individuals impacted by tech layoffs in 2024, I wanted to create a space to share some of the insight and resources that I have found helpful along my journey.

To my friends impacted by recent layoffs - I know how hard this is. Please remember that you are great, and when things get tough, reach out. I'm here to lend you support.

Insights

  • Whether it's a week, a month, or a quarter, consider what you truly want to do next. In this market, applying to anything and everything is unlikely to result in a role. Recruiters receive hundreds of applications daily. It's better to find someone within the company who can be your eyes and ears for roles that haven't been posted yet.

  • Know that you are great. You can do everything right and it may still take 9-12 months to land the next job. This is especially true if you are later in your career, and it is a presidential election year. Lean on your network for reminders when you need them.

  • Outplacement services like LHH, former colleagues who have experienced a layoff, and your local community can provide valuable guidance and support during this time.

  • Resolving issues with the state takes time, so it's best to get this process started as soon as possible.

  • See a job you're interested in? Find someone at the company with a 1st or 2nd connection to you on LinkedIn.

    • 1st Connection - Ask them to endorse you with the hiring manager and pass your resume along

    • 2nd Connection - Ask your mutual connection for an introduction and an endorsement

Having someone inside the company vouching for you is tremendously helpful. However, even when you do this, you may get ghosted - it happened to me a lot.

  • While I hope your job search is shorter, understand that it may take 9-12 months on average (in the 2024 market) for many to secure their next opportunity. Why?

Because, by the time a job opportunity is posted to a job board, the hiring manager already has a candidate or two in mind and then they will get hundreds of applications to choose from.

Having a large network to help you find jobs before they get posted is invaluable.

Remember, this timeline doesn't define your value.

  • Whether it's making introductions, offering a listening ear, or sharing my own experience, I'm here to make this process a bit more manageable for you. Feel free to schedule time with me.

Optimize Your Job Search with These Strategies

  1. Prioritize Company Websites or Indeed for Applications: Focus on applying through company websites or Indeed rather than LinkedIn. Company websites are generally kept up-to-date and Indeed's paid job listings often reflect more urgent openings, while LinkedIn's free postings might not always provide the same level of urgency.

  2. Create Tailored Application Profiles: Build specific profiles on job platforms for the roles you're targeting, such as Sales, Strategy, Channel Marketing, and Product Marketing. Customize your cover letters and resumes for each role. Although results may vary, using role-specific keywords can enhance your chances of passing through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

  3. Utilize LinkedIn for Networking and Research: Although LinkedIn may not always have the most urgent job postings, it's a valuable resource for networking and gathering insights. Use LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals, stay informed about industry trends, and learn more about potential employers.
